Luminescence dating estimates for the coastal MSA sequence of Hoedjiespunt 1 (South Africa)

چکیده

Coastal adaptations have been considered to play an important role in the bio-cultural evolution of early Homo sapiens and their dispersal out Africa. In line with this assessment, recent years seen increasing evidence for exploitation seafood from Middle Stone Age (MSA) northern southern Yet, chronological control constitutes a key problem better understanding these behaviours, little well-dated origins late Pleistocene only few sites dated before 100 ka. The shellfish-bearing MSA site Hoedjiespunt 1 (HDP1), located Western Cape South Africa, is one localities tentatively Late Pleistocene. HDP1 has yielded 1.5 m stratigraphic sequence three phases occupation, each containing abundant lithic artefacts, shellfish, terrestrial fauna, ostrich eggshell pieces ground ochre. Analyses cultural zooarchaeological remains provided systematic gathering narrow range marine resources coupled stable coastal landscapes. Here we present first complete absolute chronology its entire by applying luminescence dating (OSL) quartz grains extracted carbonate-rich sediments. results show repeated human occupations during Marine Isotope Stages 5e-5c (?130–100 ka) at HDP1, suggesting successful integration ecosystems into regular repertoire behavioural modern humans no later than beginning

Human mandibular incisors from the late Middle Pleistocene locality of Hoedjiespunt 1, South Africa.

The Hoedjiespunt 1 locality is an archaeological and palaeontological site located on the Hoedjiespunt Peninsula at Saldanha Bay, South Africa. In 1996 two human teeth, a left central mandibular incisor and a left lateral mandibular incisor, were discovered during excavations in the late Middle Pleistocene palaeontological layers. These teeth are described and are found to belong to a single su...

TSGA-MSA: Trace Sequence Algorithm for Alignment of MSA

Multiple sequence alignment (MSA) is an NP-complete and important problem in bioinformatics. In this paper, we have proposed iterative alignment method using a Genetic Algorithm for Multiple Sequence Alignment, named TSGA-MSA. The steps in this algorithm are discussed in details and its performances on a set of benchmark datasets from the BAliBase 2. 0 are analysed. The experimental results, th...

ESR dating of the Die Kelders Cave 1 site, South Africa.

ESR measurements were made on ten enamel subsamples from six teeth recovered in layers 4-5, 6, 10, and 12 in the site of Die Kelders Cave 1, South Africa. The teeth (enamel and dentine) contained significant concentrations of uranium and therefore the U uptake model has a large influence on the computed ages. Variations in moisture content in the sediment had a smaller effect on the dose rate a...

Brief communication: a new Pleistocene hominid-bearing locality at Hoedjiespunt, South Africa.

HDP1 is an archaeological and faunal site located on the Hoedjiespunt peninsula at Saldanha Bay, South Africa, that has recently yielded fossil human remains. Artefacts from the associated archaeological deposits are identified as being Middle Stone Age. U series analysis of capping calcretes and analysis of the foraminifera and fauna associated with the human fossils indicate an age for the de...

Initial burden of disease estimates for South Africa, 2000.

BACKGROUND This paper describes the first national burden of disease study for South Africa. The main focus is the burden due to premature mortality, i.e. years of life lost (YLLs). In addition, estimates of the burden contributed by morbidity, i.e. the years lived with disability (YLDs), are obtained to calculate disability-adjusted life years (DALYs); and the impact of AIDS on premature morta...
